Alicante Council ordered the removal of the plaques on the avenue dedicated to Father Ángel Escapa early yesterday morning, Monday April 14th. This decision was made in response to the Augustinian community’s admission of two cases of sexual abuse against students at the Augustinian school in the late 1970s, which were attributed to this priest. The announcement was made this weekend. Additionally, today Tuesday April 15th, the governing board announce dthe new name of this street, which is being processed “on an express basis.” It will now be called Torres de la Huerta.
The mayor of the city, Luis Barcala, made this statement during a conference at the CEV Alicante headquarters to discuss the impact of United States (US) tariffs on the local economy. He was speaking to the media.
On Saturday, April 12th, the mayor issued a statement announcing the withdrawal of Escapa’s name in light of his “conduct failing to demonstrate that he deserves this recognition, which in this case is incompatible with behaviour as socially reprehensible and alarming as sexual abuse.”
